The Upper Sandusky High School Lady Rams captured the Northern 10 Conference Track and Field Championship Friday night with a complete team effort highlighted by dominant sprint performances, clutch distance finishes, and consistent production across the field events.
From the opening events, Upper Sandusky established itself as a contender for the league crown with several strong finishes in the field events. In the high jump, Abigail Gottfried cleared 4-10 to place fourth while Molly Minehart added a seventh-place finish at 4-6. The discus squad continued the momentum with Adalee Wagner taking third at 98-6 and Melanie Bowen placing fourth at 97-8.
The Lady Rams also excelled in the pole vault where Shiloh Shasteen earned runner-up honors by clearing 9-0, while Abigail Ault added a third-place finish at 8-6. In the long jump, Rylee McCreary finished fifth with a leap of 13-9.75 while Madilyn Pagnard added valuable team points in seventh place at 13-2.25. The shot put duo of Averie Rowlingson and Kiarie Williams also contributed key points, with Rowlingson placing fourth at 31-1.5 and Williams finishing seventh at 27-9.
Upper Sandusky’s 4x800 relay team of Jocelyn Leightey, Bailey Hinesman, Madison Miles, and Abigail Ault opened the running events with a strong third-place finish in 10:27.02 before the Lady Rams’ sprint program took center stage.
The hurdles quickly helped widen the Lady Rams’ lead as Lia Wilkinson earned runner-up honors in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.31 while Lexia Johnson finished fourth in 18.20.
The 100-meter dash proved to be a huge turning point for Upper Sandusky. Jillian Stansbery captured the conference title in 13.13 while teammate Jayden Richards finished second in 13.45, giving the Lady Rams a massive scoring boost.
Moments later, Stansbery and Richards teamed with Arielle O’Flaherty and Adriane Yeater in the 4x200 relay where the quartet delivered one of the top performances of the evening. The group ran a season-best 1:48.08 to claim the conference championship while setting a new personal record.
Bailey Hinesman added more points in the 1600-meter run with a fourth-place finish in 5:59.63, while the 4x100 relay team of Stansbery, Richards, Ayala, and Shasteen earned third place in 52.34.
One of the most historic moments of the night came in the 400-meter dash where Arielle O’Flaherty delivered a performance that will be remembered for years in Upper Sandusky High School track history. O’Flaherty captured the conference championship with an outstanding time of 59.70, becoming the first Lady Ram in more than 20 years to break the 60-second barrier in the event. Teammate Kimberly Thomas also turned in a strong performance, earning a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:04.14 to add valuable points toward the team championship.
Freshman hurdler Lexie Lehnhart turned in one of the breakout performances of the night in the 300 hurdles, placing fourth in 53.24, just ahead of teammate Lia Wilkinson who finished fifth in 53.50.
In the 800-meter run, Jocelyn Leightey battled her way to a third-place finish in 2:29.32 while Bailey Hinesman added an eighth-place effort with a time of 2:45.43.
As the meet entered the final events, the team race tightened dramatically. Colonel Crawford briefly moved ahead after the 3200-meter run, which was contested before the delayed 200-meter results could be finalized due to a re-run heat situation.
The young Lady Rams distance squad answered the pressure with poise beyond their years. Freshman Madison Miles captured third place in the 3200 with a time of 12:51.30 while Felicity Bils placed sixth in 13:36.34 to keep Upper Sandusky within striking distance.
Then came the defining moment of the meet.
Once the delayed 200-meter results were finalized, the Lady Rams sprint corps officially put the championship out of reach. Arielle O’Flaherty captured the conference championship in 27.25 while Jillian Stansbery followed closely behind in second place at 27.73, delivering the points needed to secure the Northern 10 title.
Even with the championship essentially secured, the Lady Rams closed the night in unforgettable fashion. The 4x400 relay team of O’Flaherty, Yeater, Thomas, and Leightey capped the evening with a season-best performance, finishing second in 4:14.17 to punctuate an incredible night of competition.
For me, the championship represented far more than points on a scoreboard. I am absolutely blessed to have the opportunity to work with such amazing young ladies, they do an outstanding job at representing the coaches, school, and community. Hats off ladies for your League Championship Title this year. Let’s keep the clock dropping, standards rising, and tape measures being pulled further as we move into the District Meet next Thursday in Defiance.
The Lady Rams now turn their attention toward postseason competition as they prepare for next week’s district meet in Defiance.
